Rushaga Sector in the South of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Rushaga Sector is found in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The park is the home for the endangered mountain Gorillas in Uganda. In Rushaga region is where groups like Nshongi, Bweza, Mucunguzi, Busingye, Kahungye, Bishaho, Mishaya and Kutu gorilla family. Rushaga is among the regions of Bwindi impenetrable forest with the biggest number of Gorilla families in Uganda. In Rushaga, chances of gorilla permit availability since there are so many gorilla groups unlike other regions.

When you visit Rushaga, you have a chance to see the Volcano Mountains from a distance but with the finest views. The views of the Gahinga, Virunga and Mount Muhabura on a beautiful day are very clear. Seeing Lake Bunyonyi, the deepest Crater Lake in Africa en route is such a marvelous experience.

As you drive to Rushaga, you will be pleased with amazing rolling hills and valleys that characterize Kisoro district.

Given the bigger number of the habituated Gorilla families in this region, booking a gorilla permit in advance is easy. There are about 40 permits purchased every day from Uganda Wildlife Authority. Eight tourists is the number assigned to each gorilla group.

Rushaga sector is where of the gorilla families available for the Gorilla Habituation Experience is found. In the entire gorilla region that combine Bwindi forest and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda plus Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and the Virunga Park in Congo, the Habituation experience of mountain gorillas is only offered in Rushaga and Nkuringo sector.

It is advisable to ask for you preferred Gorilla group before a permit is issued in the morning hours of the tracking day before departure after briefing. You guide may help of this request based on the physical ability. Different gorilla groups involve different energies to reach.

There are different lodges off all categories in Rushaga region. When you trek gorillas in this sector, you will nights either Gorilla safari lodge, Rushaga Gorilla camp, Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, Rushaga Gorilla Havens Lodge, Nshongi Gorilla camp and Gorilla Valley Lodge among others.

Access to Rushaga Sector

Driving from Kampala, it takes between 7 to 9 hours via Mbarara, Kabale and to Rushaga. When you enter Uganda from Kigali in Rwanda, it a 4 to 5 hours’ drive going through Ruhengeri, Cyanika border, cross to Kisoro and go ahead to Rushaga. One may choose to take a scheduled flight from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro Airstrip since there is availability of daily to that countryside.
