Just like the statue of liberty in New York, Eiffel Tower in Paris, London eye in London, Taj Mahal in India, Kampala has got Gaddafi National Mosque that is covering all over the hills in the old Kampala region well shaped with strong concrete  and its built on 12 acres of land .

Gaddafi National Mosque is positioned at Kampala Hill in the Old Kampala area of Kampala, Uganda. The building was finalized in 2006; it can accommodate over 15,000 worshipers and can hold another 1,100 in the gallery, while the veranda will cater for another 3,500 people. Colonel Muammar Gaddafi of Libya built the mosque as a gift to Uganda, and for the benefit of the Muslim population. Uganda has many mosques but this one is a skyscraper mosque.

The national mosque was opened officially in June 2007 and it contains the head offices of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council.

Gaddafi national most is one of the buildings in Kampala that can be easily spotted in allover the has got good attractive gardens and the building its self is very attractive. The most is believed to be Uganda’s largest mosque with mosque positioned on the first floor and the offices are at the ground floor. This mosque is also noted to be the second largest mosque in Africa after King Hassan’s mosque in Morocco.

The assembly of the Gaddafi mosque in Kampala was started 1972 with the formation of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council by the then Ugandan government regulated by Idi Amin Dada. Unluckily, the mosque (known as Old Kampala National mosque by then) came to a cessation in 1976 until 2001. After a few months, the Mufti of Uganda Sheikh Shaban Ramadan Mubajje drew closer to Gaddafi the then president of Libya asking for support of finishing the Mosque – something Gaddafi is recognized for having satisfied.

Around 2004, the old fashioned building was demolished and reconstructed and later after a few years, the building was completed and officially inaugurated Col. Muammar Gaddafi who was the founder together with African Heads of state. The building became a place of attraction to most of the local peoples in Uganda, and even it attracted a number of Muslim in Uganda to visit the place. The building looks so stunning as it is constructed on the top of the hills .during the Muslim festivities; the place is always full with a number of worshipers.

Visiting the place is allowed at any time but there are Muslim guides who will take you through the instructions one has to follow. Women should be properly well dressed, cover their heads as the normal Muslim culture. The guides will help you to direct you in different rooms to visit, and giving you all the necessary information regarding this place.

The personality of Col. Gaddafi and the Minaret which offers great scenic views of Kampala city combine to make the Gaddafi National Mosque famous and attractive, the architecture is very unique and the interior decor is very standard and splendid together with hospitable informative guides will make you feel at home as you tour around the place.
