Bweza Gorilla Family in Rushaga Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Bweza Gorilla Family also found in Rushaga side of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the south of the park is one of the newest groups in the area. The family is led by Kakono, a Silverback. The family has 12 members consisting of 4 black backs, 2 silverbacks, 3 grownup female adults, 1 youthful gorilla plus 2 young ones.

Bweza group split away from Nshongi Family group due to intense internal disputes by the end of 2013. The emergence of Bweza is good news in that more tourists can now trek gorillas in the south of the park. Gorilla permit bookings can now be made at the Uganda Wildlife Authority offices in Kampala.

Following the increase of Rwanda gorilla permits to USD 1500 up from USD 750, Uganda welcomed an influx of more visitors to its gorilla parks. Tourists who trek gorillas in Uganda going through Rwanda tend to visit gorilla families in the south of the park since the areas are closer to Kigali than Kampala.

Gorilla tourism in Uganda is the country’s biggest earner in the tourism. Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park are organised into group and Bweza is one of them. Since this group is found in the south of the park, visitors using the Kigali route can get access to them on a 1 day, 2 days or 3 days safaris with utmost convenience.
